Grid Application Control of Optical Lightpaths Demo’ed

At the RISQ / CANARIE Advanced Networks Workshop today, application software teams demonstrated the use of User Controlled Lightpath (UCLP) for Grid applications, in particularly enabling GridFTP to setup, control, route and partition lightpaths for large grid applications. These new tools tightly bind optical networks within the Grid environment and will allow users and application to create “ad hoc” application specific or discipline specific IP routed networks using optical switched networks.

These tools can also be used in new condominium optical networks like National LambdaRail or CA*net 4 to allow regional networks or researchers to independently setup and manage many parallel ad hoc national IP routed networks. The UCLP software partitions the optical network elements such that end users can manage their portion of optical network elements and incorporate the partition within their own network as part of their IP routing, topology and discovery services.
