Caterpillar’s Distributed Virtual Reality System: Remote Collaboration in Vehicle Design

Caterpillar’s Distributed Virtual Reality System was designed for engineers, located remotely, to work together on vehicle design. The system supports collaborative design review and will support interactive redesign. Integrated real-time video and audio let engineers see and talk to each other in a shared virtual environment. The demonstration uses the vBNS to link several sites in the U.S. and Europe. The application is a vehicle simulation computation in which one participant controls and drives a virtual vehicle in a shared environment while participants at remote sites observe and evaluate it, using video and audio to communicate to each other.
