Increasingly, science research across all disciplines requires sophisticated instrumentation, analytics supported by high performance computational resources, storage repositories, sophisticated data management techniques, and specialized facilities - all closely integrated by advanced, high capacity, reliable communication services and networks. This distributed integrated, scalable, research cyberinfrastructure created and implemented for new knowledge discovery is evolving into a highly distributed, flexible Global Research Platform, supplemented by cross-continental, continental and national Research Platforms. Key foundation resource components for these Research Platforms are specialized high performance research networks and Software Defined Open Exchange Points (SDXs), which provide interoperability among those networks, in part, to address particular challenges of large scale science - interactivity across multiple domains.
